QuickStart Kids Tennis Free Play Day Jamboree.
Join the fun at the North Bossier Tennis Center for a morning of “QuickStart” tennis for kids. “QuickStart” tennis for kids is a new USTA program designed for junior players with shorter courts, smaller racquets and foam balls. The philosophy is that tennis has been in need of a smaller court & equipment for smaller players. Parents are encouraged to participate on the courts to learn more about this FUN program. Racquets & balls will be provided. Non-marking “tennis” shoes only, please. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.
Schedule will be: Ages 5-6 - 9-10 a.m. and Ages 7-10 - 10-11:30 a.m.

USTA Southern RBC Centura Singles Flex League
The USTA Singles Flex League with Men’s Singles & Women’s Singles is now available in the Shreveport-Bossier area. Deadline to register is July 28. Season play starts August 4 thru October 5. The original deadline date of July 6 has been extended. The Singles "Flex" League format allows players to set up their own matches at convenient times for both players with weekly "play by" dates suggested. Inaugural 2008 Shreveport St. Jude Classic
Team Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament August 14-17, 2008
All net proceeds will benefit the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. This event is being organized along the same format as the Baton Rouge St. Jude Classic and will include meals, beer, a live band Saturday night and THREE MATCHES GUARANTEED at least for players. All matches to be played at Pierremont Oaks and limited to the first 240 players. Tennis play begins on Friday, but the fun starts on Thursday at the Calcutta kick-off party. Please join us to make this event successful by putting together a mixed doubles team for this tournament. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear tennis friend, Anita Randall. A memorial service for Anita was held at the Boone Funeral Home on Airline Drive in Bossier City on Thursday, June 19 at 4 p.m.
She has requested in lieu of flowers that a donation be made in her name to “The American Institute for Cancer Research”, P.O. Box 97167, Washington D.C. 20090-7167.
As her daughter so aptly put it, “Anita is now playing tennis.”
Cockrell was the host site to our CTA Circuit Tournament , June 13-15.
Our next CTA Tournament will be held on Sept. 5-7 at Querbes.

HUGE Start for New QUICKSTART Kids Program on May 31 at Querbes Tennis Center.
We have 68 kids signed up so far with their parents for our New QuickStart Program that started at Querbes Tennis Center on May 31. Others will be signing up for the next Saturday at Southern Hills Tennis Center on June 7. Everyone had FUN participating with the new QuickStart play format. We want to thank our local tennis professionals and our loyal volunteers who came out Saturday. Come out and join us with this NEW EXCITING PROGRAM for kids 5-10 years old with a parent on the courts together. You can sign up at the courts on any of the scheduled Saturdays rotating facilities.
The Quickstart program designed by the USTA for young players 5-10 years old is played with smaller rackets, foam balls on a smaller court. The philosophy is that tennis has been in need of a smaller court & equipment for smaller players. Our local CTA has started this major program that allows first time younger players have the opportunity to learn tennis & play in a league format. It is currently going at three major public facilities in Shreveport. It is endorsed by our local Community Tennis Association, the Louisiana Tennis Association & the United States Tennis Association. Fee: $25, for six weeks. We encourage parents to participate on the courts with their children to help them and learn more about the program. Players receive: USTA membership, T-Shirt, Free Court time, Instruction, Prizes, & League participation. Dates are Saturdays, 2:30-3:30pm beginning May 31 for 6 weeks.

Local Volunteer Training/Dinner Event FUN for ALL.
Our Volunteer Training/ Dinner was FUN for All at the Cockrell Tennis Center on May 30, 2008. We thank tennis our host Pro James Hunt and our wonderful volunteers. Community Coordinator Cal Schexnider demonstrated more fun game-based games for our volunteers and we enjoyed a great dinner from "Podnuh's".
Volunteers are the HEART of our tennis community.

School Team Tennis in Shreveport.
Team Tennis for elementary & middle schools began Feb 5 for schools in Caddo & Bossier Parish. Competition begins with 1st & 2nd graders playing the USTA’s new version of tennis called Quickstart. 3rd graders through 8th graders play in beginner(purple), intermediate(gold) & advanced groups for experience & the opportunity to play in state & sectional competition. Some 350 youngsters participate in Team Tennis each year, with matches played in most facilities in Shreveport. Any school is invited to field a team with members of the local Community Tennis Association helping set up parents to run the schools team. Assemblies are provided free at area schools by representatives of the USTA. For further information, call Richard Verzaal at Querbes Tennis Center, 673-7787.
In our 2007 league last year, we had over 390 youth participate through the schools in Caddo & Bossier Parish. Of the 390 youth participating, we still had 25 tournament players, but we had 365 beginners and casual players. In other words, if you are looking for a place for your child or school to play, with other players just beginning, you are in the right spot!!
We welcome all levels in our leagues. We provide elementary & middle school leagues with beginner, intermediate & advanced levels of competition. We have sent winning teams to our state competition for the past 5 years & won over 10 state titles.
Congratulations to Kaye Cochran's 5.5 Senior Combo team for winning the Southern Section Championship in Baton Rouge. Team members were Sharon Boyd, Donna Cox, Sally Joiner, Pat Thurmon, Gail Tyler, Jinnie Johnson, Laura Warren and Brenda White. Great Job Ladies!!
Congratulations to Regina Pierce & Jeanette Mocklin's 6.5 Women's Combo team for winning the Southern Section Championship in Baton Rouge. FUN RCW Adult Tennis Workshop at the Indoors Racket Club.
Our NW LA CTA Recreational Coaches Workshop was a success with 30 Participants on Saturday, Jan 19, 2008 at the Indoors Racket Club.We thank our hosts, Jimmy & Barbara Livesay.We had a SUPER FUN tennis workshop with a great lunch provided.We also want to thank Billy Power, a USTA certified RCW Trainer and currently the tennis Pro at the Texarkana Country Club, for an outstanding workshop.We have received some very positive feedback from those who participated.
Physical Education & Wellness Workshop at Huntington High School with 80 P.E. Teachers.
Tennis Pro James Hunt & Community Coordinator Cal Schexnider conducted an In-Service at Huntington High School with some80+ P. E. Teachers on January 18, 2008. “We marked out two mini courts using portable nets and foam balls in the gym and demonstrated fun game based games to make learning tennis more FUN.”
Teacher In-Service Workshops complement a teacher’s large group management skills and demonstrate how to quickly to transform a school gym into a dynamic tennis-playing environment. And by using foam balls and portable nets, we can allow students to experience instant success in a fun and safe manner.
